From Ginny our T'ai Chi instructor:
My T’ai Chi journey began in 1989 in Whittier, California at the Aikido
dojo of Sensei Frank McGouirk. An interest in exercise, natural healing,
and meditation had led me to seek out a T’ai Chi class. I was aware
that T’ai Chi was effective in improving one’s health and had also
heard that it was a kind of “meditation in motion” .It sounded like the
perfect exercise for me…and it was. I knew it from my first class and
was hooked. I loved the serene atmosphere of the dojo and the
mental and physical challenges of the exercises. Attending class 3 times
a week for the next 12 years, I received a Green Sash for proficiency in
the Eight Treasures Qigong, Da Lu and the T’ai Chi Chuan Yang Family
Short Form and Long Form. I also learned the T’ai Chi Straight Sword
and Broad Sword forms, T’ai Chi Staff and Push Hands.
My Teaching
In July of 2001, I moved to Nevada to be near my son and his family
who were living in South Lake Tahoe. Upon hearing of my plans to
move, my teacher commented that it was now time for me to “go
teach”. I was stunned. I had not planned to become a “teacher”.
Out of my great respect for him, I took his suggestion to heart, and
began to consider the possibility. His confidence in me had bolstered
my own and I resolved to give it a try.
I started my first class in January of 2002 and have been teaching
continuously ever since, in Gardnerville and South Lake Tahoe. Some
of the students who started with me that first year are still with me.
This has been very heart-warming and has encouraged me to keep
going.
“Teaching” has inspired me to keep practicing and deepening my own
experience and understanding of T’ai Chi. For this I am very, very
grateful. One can learn the forms in a few months or years, but the
greatest benefits and “gifts” of this art come with a “lifetime” of
practice. This can sound “daunting” at first. The mind wants to resist
it. And that’s the beauty of T’ai Chi. It’s a “mind-training” first and
foremost. If you can control your mind, the body will follow and life
will flow easily and naturally. You will be healthy and live long. This is
the ancient promise of T’ai Chi.
Some Thoughts . . .
My personal take on T’ai Chi is that it’s more “psycho-therapy” than
anything else. To keep doing it you must continually confront your
“mind” and everything that’s in the way of you just “being there” in
class… relaxed and open. You’ve got to let all that “stuff” go or you
can’t get anywhere. What a gift! When I first started taking T’ai Chi, I
would leave class, amazed that I could feel so good; that I had
completely put my problems aside for that hour of class and was happy
and full of energy. My life was a “mess” at that time, so this was truly
a “miracle”. Sixteen years later, my life is much more serene and to
make sure it stays that way…I keep doing my T’ai Chi.
